BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team dropped its first contest of the season on Friday night against host Indiana, 3-0, marking the squad’s first loss since early November 2014. The Hokies sit at 6-1 while the Hoosiers improve to 5-2.

Despite the loss, Amanda McKinzie posted 11 kills, marking her fourth consecutive match with double-digit kills. Three Hokies each tallied five kills in the contest: Lindsey Owens, Ashley Battle, and Kennedy Bryan. Battle earned a team high, blocking four Hoosiers’ attacks. Both setters Rhegan Mitchell and Kyra Coundourides assisted 12 attacks while Coundourides collected a team-best eight digs.

Indiana’s Allison Hammond led the team with 10 kills, followed by Amelia Anderson with nine. Three Hoosiers attacked at above a .350 clip in their first program win over Tech.

Owens downed four kills in the premier frame, leading the squad with a .429 attacking percentage. However, the Hoosiers’ Chante George went 4-for-6 with two aces in Indiana’s 25-18 win.

McKinzie posted three kills in the second set while Battle and Bryan each tallied two, hitting at a .333 clip. Mirroring the first set, Indiana’s Hammond struck five kills to secure the second set victory, 25-21.

Virginia Tech’s valiant efforts in the final stanza were no match for Indiana as the Hokies were unable to over come the deficit. McKinizie’s five kills and Mitchell’s six assists kept the Hokies competitive as the squad led 21-19 late in the frame. However, the Hoosiers came back to secure the final set win, 25-22.

The Hokies return to action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., facing Northern Arizona before concluding the Indiana Invitational at 5 p.m. against Bowling Green.
