GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - After leading the undefeated Hokies to their first ever victory over a ranked team on the road, junior outside hitter Amanda McKinzie garnered Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors. This weekend’s sweep of the Spartan Invitational bumped Virginia Tech into the American Volleyball Coaches Association voting for the first time in program history.
In addition to McKinzie, Georgia Tech’s outside hitter Teegan Van Gunst was named Co-Player of the Week, while Duke’s middle blocker Leah Meyer was awarded Freshman of the Week.
McKinzie led the Hokies to a 3-0 record at the Spartan Invitational, where they defeated host No. 19 Michigan State 3-1 for the first road victory over a ranked opponent in program history. McKinzie finished the weekend with 48 kills and a 4.00 kills per set average. She also recorded 33 digs and four service aces. Virginia Tech sits remain perfect with a 6-0 overall record.
Van Gunst had 51 kills and 43 digs in the Yellow Jackets’ four weekend victories. She averaged 3.92 kills per set and 3.31 digs per set on her way to being named the MVP of the UGA Challenge. Van Gunst finished the weekend with six service aces, seven total blocks and two double-doubles. Georgia Tech has won six matches in a row for the first time since winning seven straight in 2010.
Meyer led the Blue Devils with 31 kills at the Kansas Invitational, earning all-tournament honors for her efforts. Meyer hit .431 over the weekend and posted hitting percentages of .391 or higher in all three matches. She posted a season-high 12 kills against Western Illinois and finished the weekend with five service aces, eight digs and eight total blocks.
The Hokies return to action on Friday at the Indiana Invitational, facing host Indiana on Friday and Northern Arizona and Bowling Green on Saturday.
