EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite dropping the first set of the match, the Virginia Tech volleyball team responded with three uncontested wins to secure the victory over Butler on Saturday afternoon, 18-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-19. With the conclusion of the Spartan Invitational, the Hokies extend their undefeated record to 6-0 while the Bulldogs drop to 1-5.

Three Hokies garnered all-tournament honors following the sweep of the Spartan Invitational: MVP Lindsey Owens and all-tournament team members Kenedy McGrath and Amanda McKinzie.

The McKinzie-Owens pair struck again with each outside hitter recording a double-double of kills and digs in the four-set match. Setter Rhegan Mitchell posted a third double-double for the squad with a personal best of 21 assists and 10 digs. Both Kennedy Bryan and Ashley Battle attacked over a .440-clip, with Battle collecting a team-best of five blocks. McGrath collected 14 digs during the four set win.

Butler’s Anna Logan and Mary Striedl led the attack for the Bulldogs with 10 and eight kills, respectively. Setter Makayla Ferguson assisted 17 of Butler’s 42 kills. Briana Lilly with a team-high of eight blocks made the all-tournament roster for the Bulldogs.

The Hokies got off to a rocky start in set one, but Ashley Battle walked away with a .667 attacking percentage in the frame. McKinzie led the squad with four kills. Four Bulldogs tallied three kills apiece in Butler’s first set win, 25-18.

Tech bounced back in the second set with an early 7-3 lead as McKinzie, Owens, and Jaila Tolbert dominated the attack. The squad registered a .419 attacking percentage in the set. The Bulldogs came back to tie it up at 22-all late in the frame but kills by Owens and McKinzie secured the set point and win in the second stanza, 26-24.

With Owens’ five kills, the Hokies’ momentum continued into the third set, taking their largest lead of the frame, 20-9. Tech held Butler to a mere -.077 attacking percentage, in the Hokies’ 25-17 win to reclaim the overall lead, 2-1.

Despite a 4-4 start, Tech took off to an 11-6 advantage in the fourth set. The Hokies went on a seven-point rally to take their largest lead of 17-7. Butler narrowed the margin to 24-19, but the Spartan Invitational’s MVP Owens downed the match point, 25-19.

The Hokies continue their road trip at the Indiana Invitational next weekend, facing host Indiana on Friday and Northern Arizona and Bowling Green on Saturday.
