EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team made history Friday night in its 3-1 upset over No. 19 Michigan State as the Hokies secured their first ever win over a ranked team on the road. Tech remains undefeated at 5-0 while Michigan State drops to 3-2 in the four set decision, 27-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21.
Despite constant lead changes throughout each set, the Lindsey Owens-Amanda McKinzie tandem steadied the Hokies to their milestone win, slugging 13 kills each with McKinzie collecting 11 digs to earn a double-double. Cara Cunningham hit .500 with four kills and a team-high of two service aces and four blocks.
Michigan State’s Chloe Reinig and Allyssah Fitterer led the Spartans, tallying double-digit kills with 12 and 11, respectively. Setter Rachel Minarick assisted 30 of the Spartans’ 49 total kills.
The Hokies jumped on the board with an early 10-6 lead in the first set before the Spartans tied up at 13-all. Back-and-forth action continued up until the set point, when Owen’s tied up the frame and McKinzie clinched the 27-25 win.
The two teams picked up right where they left off in the second frame as neither squad had more than a point advantage over of the other until the Hokies took off to a 17-14 lead. With McKinzie’s five kills in the frame, Tech extended its lead to 21-17 and held onto the four-point margin until the final point, 25-21.
Michigan State got off to an early lead with largest margin of 12-4, but the Hokies fought back to tie the match up at 15-all. However the Spartans’ Fitterer and Reinig with three kills apiece, secured their first win in the third set, 25-21.
Tech bounced back in the fourth set, taking the 8-3 lead from the get-go. Michigan State narrowed the margin to four late in the frame. Cunningham’s 2-for-2 showing with an ace and two blocks kept the Hokies ahead to secure the final set win, 25-21.
The Hokies return to the court tomorrow for their final match of the Spartan Invite, taking on Butler at 2:30 p.m.
