EAST LANSING, Mich. – Led by the Amanda McKinzie-Lindsey Owens duo, Virginia Tech clinched the opening match of the Spartan Invite, defeating Miami (OH) in four sets, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23. 25-16. The Hokies remain undefeated at 4-0 while the Redhawks drop to 1-4 overall.
The juniors, McKinzie and Owens, paved the way for the Hokies’ offense with 20 and 14 kills, respectively. Owens owned both sides of the ball, collecting 13 digs and her first double-double of 2015. Kennedy Bryan and Ashley Battle tallied nine kills each, with Battle hitting a team-best .538 and eight blocks. In addition to McKinzie setting a personal best in kills, Kyra Coundourides assisted 27 of the Hokies’ 59 kills and Kenedy McGrath recorded 20 digs to set new personal highs. Despite a second frame setback, Tech outhit Maimi in the win, .314-.160.
Miami’s Paige Hill headed the Redhawks’ offense with 10 kills and two solo blocks on the defensive end. Both Annie Reiswig and Olivia Rusek totaled eight kills each.
The Hokies started off strong with McKinzie’s four kills while both Owens and Battle with three kills and solo blocks. Jaila Tolbert went a perfect 2-for-2, in Tech’s 25-18 first set win.
Tech rallied back from a 21-14 deficit but fell short to Miami’s Rusek who tallied five kills in set, as the Redhawks took the second frame 25-22.
The Hokies came through late in the third set to tie the score up at 23-all as the Redhawks lead up until that point. Tech fought back with McKinzie’s five and Owens’ four kills leaving Battle to clinch the set winning point. Coundourides assisted seven of Tech’s 14 kills in the third set victory, 25-23
Tech came alive in the final stanza, slugging at a .516 clip over Miami’s .214. McKinzie downed seven kills in the fourth set alone. Tolbert hit a perfect 4-for-4 in the Hokies’ win, 25-16.
The Hokies take the court later today against tournament host, No. 19 Michigan State.
