BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech volleyball team closed out their three-match weekend unscathed with another sweep, defeating the Elon Phoenix 25-20, 25-17, 25-11. The Hokies maintain an undefeated 3-0 record as the Phoenix drop to 0-2.
“We weren’t quite as clean as we were last night but that’s normal,” head coach Chris Riley said. “When all things are clicking, we’re pretty solid. I’m excited about our team.”
Lindsey Owens anchored the Hokies throughout the three sets, hitting .684 with 14 kills and three service aces. Kennedy Bryan attacked at a .417-rate with six kills. Kyra Condourides connected 18 assists and one kill. Amanda McKinzie and Kenedy McGrath guarded the court, tallying 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Elon’s Megan Gravely and Morgan Maner downed five kills apiece for the Phoenix. Sydel Curry assisted 19 of Elon’s 24 kills throughout the match.
Owens paced the Hokies through the first set, hitting three kills in the frame. McGrath’s six digs, aided by McKinzie’s three, held the Phoenix to a -.029 attacking percentage. Tech too the first set, 25-20.
The Hokies came alive following the first frame to dominate both sides of the ball, hitting at a .447 rate with 10 blocks in the final two sets.
“We talked a little bit about owning our side of the net and owning our touches more,” Riley said. “What they do is what they do, but we need to be accountable for ourselves.”
Downing seven kills of eight attempts, Owen’s prowess showed in the second stanza. McKinzie balanced the court, hitting at .750 clip and collecting five digs. The Hokies attacked at a .464 rate to take the 25-17 win.
Tech showcased its defense in the final set as seven Hokies collected digs. Cara Cunningham recorded three blocks of Tech’s 10, allowing Elon to tally a mere four kills. Both Briana Lanktree and Alex Toben saw the court in the Hokies’ 25-11 third frame rout.
The Hokies hit the road for back-to-back weekends, starting with the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. Tech faces off against Miami (OH), Butler, and host Michigan State, currently ranked at 19.
“I’m looking forward to getting in the gym to practice a little bit more,” Riley said. “We do have a lot to work on to get ready for Michigan State next weekend.”
