GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech volleyball players Lindsey Owens and Kathryn Caine were named First Team All-ACC honors as announced Wednesday by Commissioner John Swofford.
“Congratulations to Lindsey and Kathryn,” said head coach Chris Riley. “Our team is very proud of their accomplishments this season. They have both worked hard and to be recognized for their efforts by the other coaches in the league is a great testament to their talent on the court.”
Owens earns All-ACC honors as a sophomore after being named to the All-Freshman team last season. She led the Hokies throughout the season, averaging 3.42 kills per set to rank 10th in the ACC. She tallied double-digit kills 23 times during the season, including four matches with 20 or more and a career-high of 26 at Louisville. In addition, the Orlando, Fla. native was strong on the defensive side with 312 digs and 75 blocks. Owens had double-digit digs 15 times and recorded double-doubles in 14 matches. The outside hitter recorded a stretch of five matches with double-doubles during the season.
Caine picks up her second All-ACC honor after having earned third team recognition last season. The McLean, Va. native averaged 2.31 kills per set this season while hitting .302 on the attack. She finishes her career ranked fifth in the Tech record book in hitting percentage with .318. The senior right side/middle blocker hit double-digit kills in 15 matches this season, including a career-high 18 at Clemson. In addition to her offensive efforts, Caine tallied 66 blocks.
Miami and North Carolina claimed the major honors this season with Miami’s Savanah Leaf being named Player of the Year while teammate Haley Templeton was tabbed Freshman of the Year. UNC’s Ece Taner was the Defensive Player of the Year and Joe Segula was named the Coach of the Year. Setter of the Year went to Duke’s Kelsey Williams.
Eleven different schools are represented on the All-ACC Team, led by Duke and Florida State’s five student-athletes. Four from North Carolina were recognized, followed by three from Louisville, Miami and Pitt, two from Virginia and Virginia Tech and one apiece from Clemson, Syracuse and Wake Forest.
The awards are decided based on a vote of the league’s 15 head coaches.
