PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team completed its weekend road sweep, defeating Pittsburgh 3-1 (25-13, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19) on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“We blocked exceptionally well today,” said head coach Chris Riley. “We beat a very good Pitt team and I am so proud of the way this team is playing.”
Kathryn Caine and Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (13-14, 6-8 ACC) with 12 kills each. Kennedy Bryan added nine for the offensive side. Jordan Fish put up 23 assists and Kyra Coundourides added 15.
The Hokies were strong on the defensive side, recording a season-best 18 team blocks. LaTasha Samson-Akpan tallied nine blocks, Owens posted seven and Ashley Battle had six. Megan Beckwith picked up 12 digs. Tech also recorded a season-high 11 aces.
Hokies came out strong in the opening set, getting out an 11-1 lead. Pittsburgh cut it to seven with Tech leading 19-12, but the Hokies closed it out with a 6-1 run.
In the second set, Pitt got out to the lead and was up 16-9 just past the midpoint. The Hokies responded, going on a 9-0 run that saw Caine and Owens strong on both the offensive and defensive side, recording three kills and three blocks between them. Pitt reclaimed the lead, going up 23-20 late in the set, but Tech again answered with three consecutive kills from Kennedy Bryan to tie it up at 23. Bryan combined with Samson-Akpan for back-to-back blocks to give the Hokies final two points to take the set 25-23.
Pittsburgh again got out to the lead, going up 16-10 in the third set. The Hokies cut it down to four at 21-17 as Coundourides sent an ace over the net. That is as close as Tech would get with Pitt holding on for the 25-19 win.
The Hokies led 13-10 midway through the final set following a kill from Amanda McKinzie. Tech extended its lead, going up 17-12 a few rallies later. Pitt answered, cutting it down to one at 17-16 before eventually tying it up at 19-19. The Hokies finished the set strong, closing with a 5-0 run in which Samson-Akpan was involved in four of the final five points, tallying two kills and a pair of blocks. An ace from Fish for set and match point capped the set.
Mechael Guess led Pittsburgh (21-6, 9-5 ACC) with 12 kills. Kate Yeazel added 10. On the defensive side, Delaney Clesen tallied 17 digs and Amanda Orchard had six blocks.
The Hokies will be back on the court with the final home weekend beginning on Friday, Nov. 21 against Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Tech will face Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. on Saturday and will honor seniors Kathryn Caine, LaTasha Samson-Akpan, Jordan Fish and Megan Beckwith.
