CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team avenged an early season home loss, defeating rival Virginia, 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20) on Friday night in a road match at Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville, Virginia.
“We played a great match tonight,” said head coach Chris Riley. “It’s a great rivalry and it always feels good to beat UVA. Our offense was really on-point tonight.”
Lindsey Owens led a trio of attackers with double-digit kills, posting 12 in the match for the Hokies (12-14, 5-8 ACC). Owens also had 11 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. Amanda McKinzie recorded a double-double, her sixth of the season, with 10- kills and 11 digs. Kennedy Bryan rounds out the double-digit kills with 10. Kyra Coundourides put up 23 assists and Jordan Fish notched 21.
Defensively, Megan Beckwith led the backline with 17 digs. Ashley Battle recorded five blocks at the net while LaTasha Samson-Akpan tallied four. The Hokies were strong on the defense, recording 12 team blocks and holding the Cavaliers to a .145 hitting percentage.
Tech and UVA traded runs to start the opening set and were tied at 10-10 before the Cavaliers opened it up, taking an 18-14 lead. UVA held on to the advantage, but the Hokies chipped away at it, cutting it to one at 23-22 off a kill from Kathryn Caine. Samson-Akpan knocked down a kill on the next play to tie it up at 23. The Hokies took the 24-23 lead on the next rally as Caine again had the kill. UVA got another chance after tying it up at 24. A Tech error and an ace for the ‘Hoos secured the points for Virginia to win it 26-24.
In the second set, the Hokies got out to the early lead and were up 15-10 around the midway point. UVA threatened, closing it to two at 15-13, but Tech used a 7-2 run to pull ahead 22-15. Virginia was unable to get anything going offensively as the Hokies rolled to the 25-18 win, tying the match at 1-1.
The two teams battled in the third set with 14 ties and four lead changes. Tech and UVA were tied at 15 and traded points over the next several rallies, tying at each chance with the last being at 21. The Hokies broke it open, scoring three straight to go up 24-21. An error from the ‘Hoos gave Tech the point to win the set 25-21 and go up 2-1 in the match.
Virginia Tech got out to the lead in the fourth set and was up 14-11 midway through. UVA cut it down, pulling to within one at 15-14, but the Hokies responded with a 6-2 run, extending their lead to 21-16 off a kill from McKinzie. The Cavaliers cut it to three at 23-20, but would get no closer as the Hokies used a kill from Owens followed by a block assist from Battle and Owens to take the last two needed to claim the set and the match.
Haley Kole and Jasmine Burton each had 10 kills for UVA (15-12, 8-6 ACC). Defensively, the Cavaliers were led by Lauren Fuller and Karlie Suber with 10 digs and Morgan Blair’s five blocks.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday, Nov. 16 when they travel to Pittsburgh for a 1 p.m. match against the Panthers.
