BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team led 2-1 after three sets, but Clemson came back to take the final to as the Hokies fell 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 27-25, 23-25, 13-15) on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
“I am disappointed in the lack of mental toughness that we have right now,” said head coach Chris Riley. “No one wanted to take a swing, other than Lindsey [Owens], at the end of this game. I look for more from our team and for us to be better than that. I know we are better team and we need to play better.”
Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (9-13, 2-7 ACC) with 23 kills, hitting .273 on the attack. Kathryn Caine added 18 kills and Amanda McKinzie tallied 16. Jordan Fish put up 33 assists and Kyra Coundourides notched 27.
Owens and McKinzie were also strong on the defensive side with 12 and 22 digs, respectively. Megan Beckwith posted 18 digs. At the net, Ashley Battle had seven blocks including a pair of solos while Caine tallied six block assists.
Clemson got out to the lead early in the first set and was up 14-10 just past the midpoint. Tech looked to make a late run, cutting it down to three at 20-17. CU held on to the lead, going up 24-20, but the Hokies scored the next three to close it to 24-23 off a kill from Caine. Clemson’s Karis Watson knocked down a kill on the next rally to secure the set for the Tigers 25-23.
In the second set, the Hokies got out to the advantage midway through and were up 14-11 to force the CU timeout. The Tigers responded with a run to tie it up at 15. The two teams kept it close over the next few rallies and were knotted at 20. Tech broke it open, taking a 23-20 lead, but the Tigers again closed and were within one at 23-22. A kill from Owens followed by a defensive play at the net gave Tech the final points needed for the 25-22 win.
The Hokies took a 14-9 lead midway through the third set. Tech extended its advantage, going on top 17-10 off an ace from McKinzie. Clemson answered with a 6-2 run, closing it to three at 19-16. The Hokies maintained the lead and were up 22-17, but the Tigers again responded with a run, tying it up at 23. Tech and CU tied again at 25. Caine and Battle secured the block to give the Hokies the 26-25 lead and a kill from Owens claimed the final point to win 27-25.
In the fourth set, the Hokies again led just past the midpoint, going on top 15-8 as Katie Krueger knocked down a kill. Clemson started chipping away at the lead, tying it up at 20. The two teams knotted again at 22 before the Tigers scored on back-to-back rallies to go on top 24-22. Tech scored on the next rally, closing it to 24-23, but a Hokie error gave the Tigers the point to win 25-23 and tie up the match at 2-2.
The final set was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams with 11 ties and six lead changes. Tech and Clemson traded points throughout and were tied as late as 12-12. Clemson scored the next two to break open the scoring and go up 14-12. A kill from Owens pulled the Hokies within one at 14-13, but the Tigers’ Haleigh Hampton knocked one down to take the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
Hampton led the Tigers (15-7, 4-5 ACC) with 16 kills. Watson added 10 kills and Kristin Faust tallied nine. Kate Federico put up 43 assists. Defensively, Niki Collier had 28 digs in the backcourt, while at the net Watson tallied 10 blocks.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Friday, Oct. 31, hosting Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
