BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team swept ACC foe Notre Dame, 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-16) on Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (9-12, 2-6 ACC) with nine kills. Amanda McKinzie and Kathryn Caine tallied seven kills each. On the defensive side, Megan Beckwith recorded 17 digs. Ashley Battle had five blocks and Owens posted three.
“I thought Amanda played tremendously,” said head coach Chris Riley. “She serve received very well and kept our team in system. I thought we played very well when it came to that. We served very tactically tonight and that helped to keep Notre Dame out of it. In the end though, I still think the key was Amanda and Megan and how well they passed tonight to set up our offense.”
Notre Dame took the lead midway through the opening set after breaking an 11-11 tie with a 4-0 run, going up 15-11. The Irish extended their lead, taking a seven-point advantage at 21-14. Tech chipped away at the going on two different runs, to cut it to one at 23-22 off a kill from LaTasha Samson-Akpan. The two teams tied it up at 23, 24 and 25 before the Hokies used a pair of Irish errors to secure the final points to claim the set 27-25.
The Hokies jumped out to the 17-8 lead in the second set. Notre Dame looked to make a late surge, cutting it to four at 20-16 and again at 24-20, Tech got the final point needed for the win as Owens knocked down a kill.
Tech and ND kept it close in the third set with the Hokies holding the slight 12-10 around the midpoint. The Hokies broke it open with a 5-0 run, going on top 17-10 off a kill from Samson-Akpan. ND pulled within four a few rallies later, cutting it down at 18-14. Tech responded with another run, taking a 24-16 lead. An Irish error on the last play gave Tech the point for the 25-16 win, securing the match 3-0.
Notre Dame (5-15, 2-7 ACC) was led by Nicole Smith with seven kills. Hanna Muzzonigro put up 19 assists. Defensively, Katie Higgins tallied five blocks.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday at 1 p.m., hosting Clemson at Cassell Coliseum.
