TALLHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-1 (22-25, 17-25, 25-21, 23-25) decision at No. 4 Florida State on Sunday afternoon at Tully Gym in Tallahassee, Florida.
Kathryn Caine knocked down 12 kills, hitting .400 on the attack to lead the Hokies (8-12, 1-6 ACC). Kennedy Bryan added nine kills while Katie Krueger and Lindsey Owens recorded seven each. Jordan Fish put up 25 assists and Kyra Coundourides tallied 14.
On the defensive side, Megan Beckwith had 14 digs and Ashley Battle tallied five blocks at the net.
Florida State got out to the 14-9 lead just past the mid point of the opening set. The Hokies cut the gap, pulling within one at 17-16. Tech was again within one at 23-22 off a kill fro Caine, but the Seminoles used back-to-back kills to secure the set 25-22.
The Seminoles again held the lead midway through the set at 16-9, but the Hokies answered with a 7-0 run to close it to 16-15 off the Owens’ kill. That is as close as Tech would get as Florida State closed out the set with a 9-2 run to secure the set 25-17.
In the third set, the two teams went back and forth with 15 ties and five lead changes. Tech and FSU were tied up at 13 before the Hokies scored three straight to break open the scoring and take the 16-13 lead. The Seminoles and Hokies were tied back up at 19, but Tech again used a run, going on top 22-19. A pair of kills from Caine along with a block from Battle and Owens secured the points for the Hokies to win the set 25-21.
The fourth set was also close between the Hokies and ‘Noles with the teams tied at 12. Tech used a kill from Coundourides followed by back-to-back kills from Stacey Christy to push ahead 15-12. The Seminoles answered, taking the 18-16 lead a few rallies later. The Hokies and ‘Noles were again tied up late in the set at 22, but FSU used a 3-1 run to close out the set and secure the match.
Nicole Walch had 10 kills for the Seminoles. Katie Mosher recorded 12 digs while Sarah Burrington tallied nine blocks for the defense.
The Hokies will return to Cassell Coliseum to start a four-match home stand beginning with Notre Dame on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
