CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to Miami 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 18-25, 19-25) on Friday evening at the Knight Complex in Coral Gables, Florida.
Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (8-11, 1-5 ACC) with 11 kills and 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the season and fifth in as many matches. Ashley Battle added nine kills and Katie Krueger had eight. Jordan Fish and Kyra Coundourides put up 22 and 18 assists, respectively. LaTasha Samson-Akpan had a pair of blocks on the defensive side.
In the opening set, Miami took the early lead and was up 10-8, but the Hokies answered tying it up at 11 off a kill from Kathryn Caine. The two teams traded points before the Hokies went on a 6-1 run to go on top 18-13. UM looked to make the late surge, cutting it down to 20-17. Tech maintained the advantage and got to set point at 24-20, using another kill from Caine to secure the point needed to win.
Miami got out to the lead in the second set, going up 12-6 midway through. The Hokies were unable to close the gap and get a rally going as the Hurricanes went on to win the set 25-15.
The two teams kept it close in the third set and were tied at 13. Miami scored two straight to break open the scoring and take the 15-13 lead. Tech and UM traded points, but the ‘Canes used a 4-1 run to push ahead 19-14. The Hokies closed it to a two-point difference at 20-18 off a Kennedy Bryan kill. That is as close as Tech got as Miami closed out the set outscoring the Hokies 5-0.
The fourth set played out much like the third with the teams tied at 13. The Hurricanes again moved into the lead, going up 16-13, but Tech answered to tie it up at 16 all using back-to-back aces from Coundourides. Tech and UM tied again at 17, 18 and 19, but the ‘Canes again closed out the set with a run to take it 25-19, securing the match.
Savanah Leaf led the Hurricanes (12-6, 5-2 ACC) with 18 kills while recording 11 digs. Emani Sims and Taylor Scott had 10 kills each.
The Hokies will remain in the Sunshine State to face fourth-ranked Florida State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Tallahassee.
