BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team returns home to host conference newcomer Louisville in the Hokies’ ACC home opener on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. Tech will remain at home to host NC State on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m.
THE HOKIES (7-7, 0-1 ACC)
Virginia Tech is coming off a 3-2 loss at Wake Forest in the team’s only match last weekend. Lindsey Owens led Tech with 16 kills while Amanda McKinzie and Kathryn Caine added 13 and 10, respectively.
Owens leads the Hokies on the season, averaging 3.47 kills per set with Caine adding 2.39 kps. McKinzie is chipping in 2.28 kps. The Hokies’ offense goes through a pair of setters, including Jordan Fish who is putting up 6.37 assists per set while Kyra Coundourides notches 4.75 aps.
Megan Beckwith is leading the backcourt with 3.0 digs per set and has a team-best 17 aces on the season. Ashley Battle has been strong for the Hokies at the net, averaging 1.10 blocks per set.
THE CARDINALS (9-5, 1-1 ACC)
Louisville split last weekend as the Cardinals faced their first conference opponents since joining the ACC. The Cardinals fell to Boston College on Friday, 3-2 before turning around and defeating Georgia Tech 3-2 on Sunday.
The Cardinals are led by a pair of attackers that are averaging over three kills per set. Maya McClendon leads Louisville on the season with 3.22 kps while Janelle Jenkins is posting 3.10 kps. Katie George runs the offense in the setter spot with 10.61 aps.
On the defensive side, Roxanne McVey is tallying 4.29 dps and Tess Clark averages 1.10 bps at the net.
THE WOLFPACK (12-1, 1-0 ACC)
NC State defeated Syracuse, 3-0 to open conference play last weekend. Perry Ramsey had 14 kills for the Pack.
Kaitlyn Kearney leads the Pack on the season with 2.74 kps and is also strong on the defensive side with a team-high 40 blocks. Rachel Buckely is knocking down 2.69 kps. Maggie Speaks is putting up 9.18 aps.
In the backcourt, Alston Kearns is notching 3.61 dps.
ALL-TIME vs. THE OPPONENTS
The Hokies trail Louisville 18-3 in the all-time series including a 3-2 loss last season in Louisville. Caine is the top returner from the Hokies in that game, tallying 16 kills. Owens added 15 for the Hokies and Jordan Fish put up a career-high 62 assists in the match.
McClendon and Jenkins were both solid for the Cardinals in that meeting, knocking down 14 and 13 kills, respectively. George had a double-double with 61 assists and 13 digs for Louisville.
Tech leads the series against NC State 19-10 and won both meetings last season with scores of 3-0. Caine is the top returner from the match last season in Blacksburg, tallying nine kills. Dariyan Hopper had eight kills for the Wolfpack.
UP NEXT
The Hokies travel to Clemson on Friday, Oct. 10 for a 7 p.m. match against the Tigers. Tech will return home to play in-state rival Virginia on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.
