BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team completed the sweep on Saturday, defeating Marshall 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) in the final match of the 2014 Hokie Invitational to claim the title. Tech went unbeaten in sets, winning all three matches, 3-0.
“We’re thrilled that we went 3-0 in this tournament and didn’t lose a set,” said head coach Chris Riley. “We still have some things we need to work on, but we were very tough and played good defense all weekend long.”
Lindsey Owens earned tournament MVP honors after averaging 3.22 kills and 3.67 digs per set. Ashley Battle and Kathryn Caine were both tabbed to the All-Tournament team. Battle averaged 2.22 kills and 1.11 blocks while Caine knocked down 2.89 kps.
Caine also led the Hokies (7-6) against Marshall with 10 kills. Battle added eight kills and a pair of blocks. Amanda McKinzie was also strong on the block with three, including two solos. Megan Beckwith tallied 15 digs for the back row.
The Hokies and Herd were tied at 13-13 midway through the set before Tech went on a 7-0 run to break open the scoring, taking the 20-13 lead off a kill from Battle. Marshall cut it down to four at 20-16, but the Hokies outscored the Herd 5-1 to close out the set and take it 25-17.
Tech got out to the lead in the second set and was up 13-9 around the mid-point. The Hokies maintained the advantage and were up 17-15 before MU scored three unanswered to go on top 18-17. The two teams kept It close with Marshall hold the 21-19 advantage, but the Hokies responded to the challenge, scoring the next six capped by an ace from Beckwith to secure the set point to give Tech the 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final set, Marshall took control early and was up 14-10 just past midway. The Hokies responded with a 7-2 run to take its first lead since the opening rallies at 17-16 off a block from LaTasha Samson-Akpan and Katie Krueger. Marshall again surged ahead, going on top 21-18 late in the set. Tech put together the counterstrike scoring the next three points to reclaim the lead at 22-21. The two teams were tied up at 23, but a kill from Battle followed by a Marshall error gave the Hokies the points to win 25-23 and take the match 3-0.
Cassie Weaver led Marshall (5-9) with 10 kills. Allie Kellerman had 10 digs and Jillian Shemanski posted five blocks for the defensive side.
Weaver was named to the All-Tournament team along with UNCW’s Nicole Loft and Radford’s Jena Braden and Maddi Palmer.
The Hokies will return to the court next weekend with the ACC opener, traveling to Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 26 for a 6:30 p.m. match against the Demon Deacons.
