BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team swept past Radford, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday morning during the second day of competition at the Hokie Invitational at Cassell Coliseum.

Lindsey Owens knocked down 12 kills for the Hokies (6-6) and notched nine digs on the defensive side. Kathryn Caine added 10 kills for the Tech offense. Jordan Fish topped the 3,000 career assist mark and had 19 in the match while Kyra Coundourides put up 15.

Megan Beckwith led the defense with 12 digs and Ashley Battle had a big match at the net with five blocks including three solos.

The Hokies took the early lead in the opening set, going up by seven at 17-10 as Amanda McKinzie knocked down a kill. Radford fought its way back with a 9-3 run to cut it down to 20-19. The Hokies scored the next three points to take the 23-19 advantage. RU looked ot make the late run, closing within two at 24-22, but a kill from Caine secure the set for the Hokies.

Tech and Radford kept it close in the second set with the Hokies holding the 13-11 lead at the midway point. Virginia Tech maintained its advantage, going u by four at 17-13, but the Highlanders again answered, closing it to one at 18-17. Tech responded with a 4-0 run to go ahead 22-17. Radford would get no closer the rest of the way as the Hokies rolled to the 25-18 win.

In the final set, the Hokies again led at the mid-point and were on top 13-11. Radford kept within striking distance and closed to within one several times in the final rallies, trailing by as many at 22-21. Caine knocked down three consecutive kills for the Hokies to close out the set, winning 25-21.

Emma Deininger tallied nine kills for Radford (9-4). Savannah Cantrell added seven and had five blocks for the defense. Kelby Jackson recorded 17 digs.

The Hokies will be back on the court at 7 p.m. against Marshall in the final match of the 2014 Hokie Invitational.
