BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team opened its home slate in strong fashion, downing UNC Wilmington, 3-0 (25-11, 27-25, 25-14) on Friday night at Cassell Coliseum during the opening day of the Hokie Invitational.
“We played a great match,” said head coach Chris Riley. “I think offensively we were very good. Lindsey [Owens] was really on top of her game both offensively and defensively. She was tough to stop. We beat a very good team in UNC Wilmington tonight.”
Amanda McKinzie led the Hokies (5-6) with 12 kills, hitting .323 on the attack. Owens added 10 kills, hitting .364 while Ashley Battle knocked down seven kills, hitting .700. Owens and McKinzie were also strong on the defensive side with 17 and 10 digs, respectively. Jordan Fish put up 23 assists and Kyra Coundourides tallied 16.
The Hokies dominated the opening set, getting out to the 14-5 lead just past the midway point of the set. Tech led 21-9 before the Seahawks hit the double-digit mark on the next rally. The Hokies closed out the set outscoring the Seahawks, 4-1 to roll to the 25-11 win.
The second set played out much differently from the first as UNCW took the 13-10 lead at the midpoint. UNCW kept the advantage and was up by four at 19-16 before the Hokies went on a run to tie it up at 20. The Seahawks again claimed the lead and was up 24-22, but the Hokies scored on back-to-back rallies, tying it up at 24 off a kill from McKinzie. The two teams were tied again at 25, but Tech kill from McKinzie followed by one from Katie Krueger gave the Hokies the points for the 27-25 win.
In the final set, the Hokies got out to the lead, going up 13-10. UNCW kept it close and trailed by three at 15-12, but the Hokies went on a tear, outscoring the Seahawks 12-2 over the final rallies of the set to take the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.
Nicole Lott led the Seahawks (9-3) with eight kills while Morgan Kline added seven. Morgan Owney tallied 13 digs on the defensive side.
Tech will be back on the court on Saturday for two matches. The Hokies will open the day against Radford at 10 a.m. before facing Marshall in the final match of the Hokie Invitational at 7 p.m.
