MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In a match that had 34 ties and 11 lead changes, the Virginia Tech volleyball went back-and-forth with Washington State, but the Cougars held on to win 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 22-25) Friday night during the opening day of the Blue Raider Bash in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Lindsey Owens tallied nine kills in the match for the Hokies (3-6) while Amanda McKinzie added eight. Jordan Fish and Kyra Coundourides put up 17 and 14 assists, respectively.
McKinzie also led the Hokies on the defensive side with six digs and three blocks. Ashley Battle, Katie Krueger and LaTasha Samson-Akpan also had three blocks, each.
Virginia Tech and Washington State kept the opening set close early and were tied at 10 before the Cougars went on a 5-1 run to break open the scoring. WSU maintained the lead and was up 24-19, but the Hokies looked to make a late surge, scoring three straight to cut it down to 24-22. The Cougars used a kill from Jaicee Harris on the next rally to get the point needed to take the set.
The second set had the two teams trading points early and were tied at 14-14. Tech scored on back-to-back rallies to go up 16-14 off an ace from Owens. The Hokies extended their lead and were up 19-16, but the Cougars answered, knotting it up at 22. WSU’s frontline knocked down three straight kills to come back for the 25-22 win.
Tech and WSU were tied up at 11, but the Cougars broke the stalemate with a 4-0 run to take the lead. Washington State extended its advantage to lead by six at 24-18. The Hokies again looked to make a late move, cutting it down to 24-22 off a kill from Battle. WSU’s Harris again hit a kill on the final rally to score the set and match securing point.
Kyra Holt had 12 kills to lead the Cougars (6-1) while Ver’Leea Hardaway added 11. Chelsey Bettinson added eight kills and a match-high four blocks.
The Hokies will wrap up the Blue Raider Bash on Saturday in a 12:30 match against No. 12 Illinois.
