MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team battled with Belmont to five sets, but the Bruins held on for the 3-2 (25-14, 20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 13-15) win on Friday afternoon at the Blue Raider Bash in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (3-5) with 15 kills while Kathryn Caine added 11. Jordan Fish and Kyra Coundourides put up 30 and 20 assists, respectively. Fish recorded her second double-double of the season, adding 12 digs on the defensive side.
Megan Beckwith led the backline defense with 17 while Ashley Battle swatted seven blocks, including a pair of solos.
In the opening set, the Hokies came out on fire, jumping out a 13-6 lead. Belmont would cut it to five at 16-11, but the Hokies answered, going on a 9-3 run to close out the set and win 25-14.
The two teams kept it close in the second set and were tied at 13. Belmont broke open the scoring to take a three point, 18-15 lead a few rallies later. Tech closed it to two at 19-17, but the Bruins outscored the Hokies 6-3 to secure the 25-20 win and tie the match up at 1-1.
Virginia Tech came out in the third set much like the first, getting out to the 13-9 lead at the midway point. The Hokies extended their advantage, going on a 8-3 run to go up 21-12 off a kill from Caine. Belmont was unable to respond as Tech rolled to the 25-15 win, taking the 2-1 lead in the match.
Belmont got off to a hot start in the fourth set, taking a 15-4 lead, but the Hokies answered going on a 15-4 run to tie it up at 19 as Owens knocked down back-to-back kills. The teams traded points and were tied at 22, but the Bruins held on, scoring the final three points to win the set 25-22 and force the match in to a fifth.
In the final set, the Bruins led 10-4, but Tech again chipped away at the deficit, closing within one at 14-13. Belmont’s Emma Price knocked down a kill on the next rally to give the Bruins the point needed to win the set 15-13 and the match, 3-2.
Arianna Person led the Bruins with 15 kills while recording 12 digs. Alex Martin added nine kills and six blocks.
The Hokies will be back on the court tonight at 7:30 p.m. taking on Washington State.
