Tech shuts out Middle Tennessee, 3-0

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team defeated Middle Tennessee 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-21) on Thursday evening at Alumni Memorial Gym in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (3-4) with 12 kills. Kathryn Caine posted 10 kills while hitting .562 on the attack. Ashley Battle also had a strong match at the net, hitting .750 on six kills and recording four blocks on the defensive side.

Jordan Fish put up 28 assists and Kyra Coundourides notched 14. Megan Beckwith had 13 digs for the backcourt defense.

The Hokies hit .333 as a team while holding the Blue Raiders (2-6) to just .043.

In the opening set, the Hokies came out on fire, knocking down .542 on the attack. Tech boasted 15 kills with just two errors in the opening frame of the match. The Hokies jumped out to the 13-4 lead midway through the set and never looked back, rolling to the 25-12 win.

Tech again took the lead midway through the second set and was up 14-8 before the Blue Raiders went on a short, 6-2 run to get it down to 16-13. The Hokies answered and again extended their lead, going on top 20-13 off a kill from Katie Krueger. MT looked to make a move late and cut it to 23-19, but kills from Owens and Caine secured the points for Tech to take the set 25-20.

In the final set, the Hokies were up 11-7, but Middle Tennessee chipped away at the deficit, tying it up at 16-16. The two teams traded points over the next few rallies and were tied at 18 before the Hokies scored on back-to-back plays to go up 20-18. The Blue Raiders kept it close, but were never able to overcome the Hokies as Tech went on to win the set 25-21, securing the match 3-0.

Middle Tennessee was led by Chelsea Ross with 12 kills. Jazmyne Johnson added four.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Friday for the first day of the Blue Raider Bash hosted by MT. Tech will face Belmont at noon before squaring off against Washington State in a 7:30 p.m. match in Murfreesboro.
