ATHENS, Ohio – Lindsey Owens posted a career-high 23 kills, as the Virginia Tech volleyball team battled Ohio in a match that saw 41 ties and 15 lead changes before falling 3-1 (23-25, 22-25, 30-28, 14-25) in the final match of the Baymont Inn & Suites Invitational on Saturday evening in Athens, Ohio.
Owens also tallied her second double-double of the day adding 15 digs for the Hokies’ (2-4) defense and recording three blocks. Kathryn Caine had seven kills. Kyra Coundourides and Jordan Fish put up 27 and 21 assists, respectively.
Amanda McKinzie led the back-court with 17 digs and Ashley Battle also recorded three blocks at the net.
The Hokies and Bobcats had 15 ties and six lead changes in the opening set, going back and forth throughout. Neither team held more than a two-point lead in the set and were knotted as late as 23. The Bobcats used a block and a Hokie error to secure the points to take the first, 25-23.
In the second set was much the same with 12 ties between the teams. The Hokies pushed ahead and were up 19-12, but the Bobcats answered with a 7-0 run to tie it up. Ohio went up 23-22 and used back-to-back kills, closing out the set for the 25-22 win.
Ohio led midway through the third set, 15-12. The Bobcats maintained the lead, but Tech rallied late, tying it up at 22 off a block from Owens. Virginia Tech and Ohio traded points, going in to the extra rallies after being tied at 25, 26, 27 and 28. The Hokies secured kills from Owens and Caine, scoring the final points to win 30-28.
The Bobcats got out to the early lead in the final set and were up 14-8. Tech was unable to get anything going on the offensive side as Ohio went on to claim the set 25-14, securing the match.
Kelly Lamberti posted 20 kills for the Bobcats (3-3). Abby Gilleland put up 45 assists. On the defensive side, Meredith Ashy had 20 digs and Lamberti notched four blocks.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Thursday, Sept. 11 at Middle Tennessee, taking on the Blue Raiders in a 7 p.m. match during the first day of the Blue Raider Bash in Murfreesboro, Tenn.For updates on Virginia Tech volleyball, follow the Hokies on Twitter Follow @VT_VBall
