ATHENS, Ohio – The Virginia Tech volleyball team battled back-and-forth with Texas A&M, but fell to the Aggies, 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 22-25) on Saturday morning at the Baymont Inn & Suites Invitational hosted by Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
Owens knocked down 11 kills to lead the Hokies’ (2-3) offense and picked up 14 digs on the defensive side. Kathryn Caine added nine kills. Jordan Fish recorded 17 assists and Kyra Coundourides had 10. LaTasha Samson-Akpan was also strong on the defensive side with three blocks.
The Hokies got out to the early lead and was up 10-3 following an ace from Megan Beckwith. Texas A&M chipped away at the lead over the next several rallies and tied it up at 19-19. The two teams were again knotted on the next point, but the Aggies scored two straight, extending their lead to 22-20. Tech would score just once more as the Aggies rallied to take the first set 25-22.
In the second set, the two teams went back and forth with nine ties and four lead changes. Virginia Tech and Texas A&M were tied at 13 midway though before the Hokies went on a little run to go up 16-13 off an Owens’ kill. The Aggies answered with a 7-2 run, going on top 20-18. Tech cut it down to one at 23-22, but Texas A&M secured the points needed to take the set 25-22.
The final set played much like the second with nine ties and five lead changes. Tech and Texas A&M kept it close throughout and were tied as late as 18-18. The Aggies scored the next three to go up 21-18. Tech cut it down to one at 21-20, but that is as close as the Hokies would get. The Aggies went on to take the set 25-22.
Angela Lowak led the Aggies (4-1) with nine kills. Emily Hardesty added eight. Stephanie Aiple tallied a double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs.
The Hokies will wrap up the tournament in the final match tonight at 7 p.m. against host-team Ohio.
