LEXINGTON, Ky. ­– Sophomore Lindsey Owens hit .520 on the attack, knocking down 13 kills to lead the Virginia Tech volleyball team past Wichita State on Saturday afternoon at the Bluegrass Battle in Lexington, Kentucky.

Owens went tallied 13 kills on 25 attempts with no errors for the Hokies’ (1-1) offense. She also tallied seven digs on the defensive side. Fellow sophomore Amanda McKinzie added nine kills and tallied a team-high nine digs. Jordan Fish put up 21 assists and freshman Kyra Coundourides notched 16.

LaTasha Samson-Akpan tallied five blocks including a pair of solo blocks on the defense.

The two teams kept it close in the opening set with nine ties and two lead changes and were knotted at 14-14 before the Hokies went on a 5-1 run to break it open and take the 19-15 lead. The Shockers cut it down to three at 20-17, but that is as close as the Hokies would allow them to get, securing the set 25-20.

In the second set, Tech came out strong, taking a 13-8 lead at the midway point. The Hokies dominated in the final half of the set with the Shockers got no closer than four the rest of the way as Tech rolled to a 25-16 win.

The final set played out in much the same way as the first, going back and forth with 14 ties and four lead changes. Virginia Tech and Wichita State traded points throughout and were tied as late as 19-19. A kill from Kathryn Caine followed by a Shockers error put the Hokies in front 21-19, marking the largest lead by either team since the opening rallies. WSU scored the next point, but the Hokies responded to go up 24-20 off a kill from Owens. The Shockers again took possession of the serve, but a kill from Owens gave Tech the point needed to secure the set 25-21.

The Hokies hit .422 on the attack as a team with 44 kills on 83 attempts with just nine errors.

Katie Reilly led the Shockers with eight kills. Mikaela Raudseep added six kills.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court tonight to face host-team No. 19 Kentucky. Match time is slated for 8 p.m.
