BLACKSBURG, Va. – Samantha Gostling knocked down 13 kills to lead the Virginia Tech volleyball team past ACC foe Maryland, 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-10) on Friday night at Cassell Coliseum.
Gostling’s 13 kills led a trio of Hokies (22-11, 10-9 ACC) in double-digits. Victoria Hamsher added 12 kills while Lindsey Owens recorded 10 kills and 18 digs for her ninth double-double of the season and her third in as many matches. Jordan Fish put up 38 assists and tallied 10 digs.
Hamsher was also strong on the defensive side with four blocks. LaTasha Samson-Akpan had three blocks and Megan Beckwith tallied 16 digs.
Maryland came out strong in the opening set, taking the early 11-5 lead. The Hokies looked to make a run and cut it down to four at 19-15 off a Maryland error, but the Terrapins again extended their advantage going up six at 22-16. Tech closed to within four again at 24-20, but a Hokie error gave the Terps the point to win the set 25-20.
In the second set, the Hokies led 13-10 midway through the set off a kill from Owens. Maryland kept it close and was within three at 16-13, but the Hokies went on a 3-0 run to go up 19-13. Tech continued to dominate in the set and took the win at 25-18 off a kill from Hamsher.
The two teams kept it close early in the third frame with the Hokies holding a 9-7 lead before going on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 15-7 off a kill from Hamsher. The Terrapins would close to within five at 22-17, but the Hokies closed out the set, outscoring Maryland 3-0 to win 25-17.
Virginia Tech dominated in the fourth set, opening with a 14-4 run. The Terrapins were unable to get anything going offensively as Tech hit .520 in the set and rolled to the 25-10 win to secure the match.
The Hokies held Maryland to a .099 hitting percentage while knocking down .280 as a team. Tech was strong on the defense with 65 digs and 9.5 blocks.
Emily Fraik and Mary Cushman recorded nine kills each for Maryland (13-18, 5-14 ACC). Julia Anderson and Amy Dion tallied 20 and 13 assists, respectively. Sarah Harper picked up 11 digs on the defensive side.
Virginia Tech will host Pittsburgh on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in the final match of the season. The Hokies will honor seniors Gostling, Hamsher and Allison Munter prior to the match.
