CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to in-state ACC rival Virginia 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 18-25, 19-25) on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville, Va.
Kathryn Caine posted 17 kills for the Hokies (21-11, 9-9 ACC), hitting .393 on the attack. Lindsey Owens added 14 kills and had 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the season and her second in as many matches. Jordan Fish put up 46 assists on offense.
On the defensive side, Kenedy McGrath picked up 13 digs and Megan Beckwith had 11. Owens recorded a team-best three blocks.
The two teams kept it close early in the first set with UVa holding the 12-10 lead at the midway point. Tech responded with an 8-1 run to go on top 18-13 off a Cavalier error. Virginia looked to rally late in the set, cutting the lead down to one at 23-22. The two teams traded points on the next rallies with Tech holding on to the lead at 24-23. A kill from Owens secured the point for Tech to take the set.
In the second set, Virginia Tech and UVa again kept it close early, but the ‘Hoos went up by six at 16-10 to force the Tech timeout. The Hokies trailed at 22-15, but looked to make a late charge scoring four straight to cut the lead down to 22-19 as Caine knocked down a kill. Virginia closed out the set though, scoring three straight to win 25-19 and tie the match at 1-1.
Virginia took an early lead in the third frame, getting out to a 7-3 lead. The Hokies tied it up at 13-13 as Amanda McKinzie sent an ace across the net. UVa went back on top by two, scoring on the next two rallies, but Tech kept it close and trailed by two at 18-16. Virginia went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 23-16. Tech was unable to get a rally going as UVa took the set 25-18.
The Hokies fell behind in the fourth set and trailed at 10-5. Tech and UVa traded points over the next rallies, but the Hokies were unable to get a run going in the set as the ‘Hoos held on for the 25-19 win.
Virginia Tech will return home to wrap up the regular season, hosting Maryland on Friday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies will face Pittsburgh on Saturday, Nov. 30 in a 7 p.m. match at Cassell.
