CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to No. 15 North Carolina, 3-0 (15-25, 21-25, 14-25) on Friday evening in ACC action at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Samantha Gostling tallied nine kills for the Hokies (20-9, 8-7 ACC). Victoria Hamsher added seven kills and recorded six blocks for the defensive side. Megan Beckwith secured eight digs on the defense.
In the opening set, UNC got out early, taking a 13-6 lead to force a Tech timeout. Virginia Tech trailed at 20-12, but the Hokies looked to make a late run, cutting it to a five-point, 20-15 deficit off a block from Lindsey Owens. The Heels responded to close out the set with a 5-0 run to win 25-15.
Tech and UNC kept it close early in the second set and were tied at 10-10. The Heels went on a small run to go on top 13-10 off a kill from Victoria McPherson. Virginia Tech cut it back down to one several times over the next few rallies and trailed by as many at 22-21. The Heels went up by two on the next serve off a Tech error. UNC followed up with an ace and kill to secure the set, 25-21.
The Hokies and the Heels went back and forth in the opening rallies of the third set, but the Heels went on a run midway through to go up 16-10. Virginia Tech was unable to get anything going on the offensive side as the Heels secured the set with a 9-4 run to win 25-14.
Kayla Berringer tallied 10 kills for the Tar Heels (23-3, 12-3 ACC) while McPherson added nine. Lauren Adkins and Paige Neuenfeldt tallied seven blocks each and Jovana Bjelica had nine digs for the defense.
The Hokies remain on the road to face NC State tomorrow in a 7 p.m. match at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.
