BLACKSBURG, Va. – Seniors Victoria Hamsher and Samantha Gostling combined for 34 of Tech’s 63 kills to lead the Virginia Tech volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 25-15) win over 18th-ranked Florida State on Saturday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
Hamsher hit .484 on the attack for the Hokies (20-8, 8-6 ACC) with 19 kills and just four errors on 31 attempts. Gostling was also consistent on the attack with 16 kills and four errors on 39 attempts to hit .308. Juniors Kathryn Caine and LaTasha Samson-Akpan were just shy of the double-digit mark, tallying nine kills each.
“I thought we played really well,” said Virginia Tech Head Coach Chris Riley. “We were really aggressive with our serving and our attacking and we were really consistent with our play. Tori Hamsher and Sam Gostling really wanted to make this weekend special and instead of just talking about it, they went out and did it."
Jordan Fish had 52 assists for the offense to hit the 2,500 career-assist milestone in her junior season.
On the defensive side, Lindsey Owens recorded 13 digs and Kenedy McGrath had 10. Samson-Akpan tallied three blocks.
The two teams kept it close in the opening set, with the Hokies taking a 15-13 lead just over the midway point. Florida State closed to within one several times, but the Hokies maintained the advantage and were up 24-21 when a kill from Gostling secured the point for Tech to take the first set 25-21.
In the second frame, FSU and Tech again kept it close throughout, but the Seminoles held the lead at the midway point, up 14-12. Tech looked to make a run late in the set, trailing by one at 17-16, but the ‘Noles went on a run to go up 21-16. The Hokies again threatened late, trailing 22-20 but the Seminoles scored three straight to win 25-20 and tie the match at 1-1.
Tech took the 13-7 lead in the third set. The Hokies held their advantage, but FSU chipped away and cut it down to two at 22-20. A kill from Hamsher followed by a kill from Gostling put Tech up 24-20, but the ‘Noles scored on the next rally. The Hokies secured the win as Gostling knocked down a kill for the 25-21 win to put Tech ahead 2-1 in the match.
Virginia Tech dominated the final set, taking a 15-6 lead off a kill from Samson-Akpan. FSU was unable to generate any offense as the Hokies continued to roll, winning the set 25-15 to secure the match.
The win marks the first time the Hokies have beaten a ranked team since defeating FSU on Oct. 29, 2010 when the Seminoles were 25th.
Nicole Walch had 12 kills for the Seminoles (18-7, 11-3 ACC) while Elise Walch added 11. Katie Mosher tallied 13 digs for the FSU defense and Ashley Neff had six blocks.
The Hokies will return to the court on Friday, Nov. 15 at No. 19 North Carolina. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
