Hokies fall to Georgia Tech, 3-1

ATLANTA – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to Georgia Tech 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 21-25, 22-25) on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at O’Keefe Gym in Atlanta, Ga.

Samantha Gostling led the Hokies (18-8, 6-6 ACC) on the attack with 11 kills. Kathryn Caine and Kennedy Bryan added 10 kills each. Jordan Fish posted 42 assists for the offense.

On the defensive side, Megan Beckwith notched 26 digs and Victoria Hamsher tallied four blocks.

Georgia Tech took the early lead in the opening frame, going up 13-6 midway through the set. The Hokies answered with an 8-3 run to cut the Yellow Jackets lead down to two at 16-14 off a Georgia Tech error. The Yellow Jackets again went on a run to extend their lead, going up 22-15 late in the set. The Hokies again looked to rally late, but the Yellow Jackets held on for the 25-20 win.

Virginia Tech got out on top early in the second set, going up 10-6 off a kill from Caine. The Hokies maintained their lead and extended it with a 10-5 run, going on top 20-11. Georgia Tech would get no closer than six in the final rallies and trailed by as many at 24-18. A kill from Bryan secured the point for the Hokies to take the 25-18 win, evening the match at 1-1.

The two teams traded points in the third set with 13 ties and six lead changes. Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech were tied at 12-12 before the Yellow Jackets scored on back-to-back rallies to go up 14-12. The Hokies trailed by one (21-20) late in the set, but the Yellow Jackets closed it out with a 5-1 run to pick up the 25-21 win.

In the final set, Virginia Tech held a slight lead at 11-8, but the Yellow Jackets answered to tie it up at 12-12. The two teams traded points, tying several more times over the final rallies and were knotted late in the set at 22-22. Georgia Tech scored three unanswered points to win 25-22, claiming the match.

Jennifer Percy had a match-high 15 kills while Courtney Felinski added 12. Annika Van Gunst and Chanell Clark-Bibbs tallied 10 each. Defensively, Van Gunst added 17 digs for a double-double. London Ackermann had 15 digs and Quinn Evans tallied five blocks.

The Hokies will be back at home on Friday, Nov. 8, hosting Miami at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
