CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team battled ACC foe Clemson on Friday evening to three sets, but was edged by the Tigers 3-2 (17-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 12-15) at Jervey Gym in Clemson, S.C.

Victoria Hamsher knocked down 16 kills while hitting .517 on the attack for the Hokies (18-7, 6-5 ACC). Samantha Gostling added 13 kills and Kathryn Caine tallied 10. Jordan Fish put up 56 assists for Tech’s offense.

The Hokies posted 80 digs on the defensive side with Megan Beckwith leading the way with 21. Amanda McKinzie added 17 and Kenedy McGrath had 11. Kennedy Bryan recorded three solo blocks and Hamsher had three block assists.

Virginia Tech and Clemson (12-10, 6-5 ACC) kept it close early in the opening set with Tech trailing by one at 11-10. The Tigers went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 17-10. Tech cut the lead down to four at 20-16, but Clemson closed out the set with a 5-1 run to secure the 25-17 win.

In the second set, the Hokies and Tigers were tied at 8-8 before Tech went on a run to go on top 16-11. The Hokies were up 20-19 late in the set and extended their lead to 22-19. The Tigers would only get as close as three in the final rallies as Tech clamed the 25-21 win to even the match at 1-1.

The two teams battled in the third set with 14 ties and eight lead changes. Tech and CU traded points throughout and were tied late in the set at 19-19. Clemson went up by two at 21-19, forcing the Tech timeout. The Hokies closed to within one at 24-23, but a block by the Tigers scored the point needed for a 25-23 win as Clemson took a 2-1 lead in the match.

Virginia Tech and Clemson were tied at 14-14 just over midway through the fourth frame. The Hokies scored the next three and went up 17-14 off a kill from Bryan. Clemson would get no closer than three in the final rallies as Tech finished out the set with an 8-5 run to win 25-19, tying the match at 2-2.

In the final set, Tech and Clemson were tied at 7-7 before the Tigers went on a run to go up 10-7. CU led by four at 12-8, but Tech looked to answer late in the set, and pulled to within one at 12-11 off a block from Bryan. Clemson closed out the set, outscoring the Hokies 3-1 for the 15-12 win to secure the match.

Monisha Simmons had 18 kills for the Tigers and Leah Perri recorded 14. Kristin Faust added 10 kills. Defensively, Niki Collier notched 22 digs and Beta Dumancic put back six blocks.

The Hokies remain on the road to face Georgia Tech on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. in O’Keefe Gymnasium.
