BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team downed ACC newcomer Notre Dame, 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21) on Friday night at Cassell Coliseum.
Lindsey Owens knocked down 17 kills to lead the Hokies (18-6, 6-4 ACC) on the offense and added a match-high 15 digs for the defense to record her sixth double-double of the season. Kathryn Caine added 16 kills, hitting .483 on the attack. Victoria Hamsher posted a career-high five aces in the match and Jordan Fish put up 51 assists.
Defensively, LaTasha Samson-Akpan had four blocks and Megan Beckwith had 13 digs.
The Hokies and Irish went back and forth in the opening set with 10 ties and four lead changes. The two teams were tied as late as 18-18 before Tech scored on back-to-back rallies to pull ahead 20-18. The Hokies maintained the lead, with Notre Dame unable to tie it up in the final rallies. Tech took the first set 25-23.
Virginia Tech took the early lead in the second frame and went up 12-6 off a kill from Kennedy Bryan. The Hokies held on to the lead and were up 21-17, but the Irish rallied back, tying it up at 22-22. Tech scored once more, but Notre Dame closed out the set with a 3-1 run to win 25-23 and tie the match at one-all.
The two teams battled in the third frame, tying 10 times. Tech and Notre Dame were tied as late as 19-19, but the Hokies went on a 4-0 run to go up 23-19 off a kill from Samson-Akpan. The Hokies took the set, 25-20, off a kill from Caine followed by a block from Hamsher and Caine.
Virginia Tech took control of the fourth set early and led by five at 16-11. The Irish looked to make a late run and trailed by three several times over the final rallies including at 24-21. An attack error by the Irish gave Tech the point it needed for the 25-21 win, securing the match 3-1.
Andie Olsen and Jeni Houser had eight kills each to lead the Irish (8-12, 2-7 ACC), while Maggie Brindock put up 29 assists. Houser was also strong on the defensive side for Notre Dame, recording 10 blocks while Toni Alugbue had 11 digs.
The Hokies return to the road next weekend, traveling to Clemson on Friday, Nov. 1 before making the trip to Georgia Tech on Sunday, Nov. 3.
