BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to ACC rival Virginia, 3-1 (15-25, 28-30, 29-27, 17-25) on Wednesday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
Kennedy Bryan posted 11 kills for to lead the Hokies (17-6, 5-4 ACC) on the offense. Victoria Hamsher added 10 kills while hitting .692 on the attack, and Kathryn Caine notched nine kills. Jordan Fish put up 46 assists.
On the defensive side, Megan Beckwith recorded 25 digs. LaTasha Samson-Akpan had four blocks and Gostling added three.
The Cavaliers got out early as Tech trailed 15-12 just past the mid-point of the opening set. Virginia Tech never got anything going offensively in the final rallies as the ‘Hoos closed out the set with a 10-3 run for the 25-15 win.
In the second set, UVA was up late in the set at 20-17. The Hokies went on a run to tie it up at 21-21 off a block from Gostling. The two teams traded points, tying seven more times in the final rallies and were knotted at 28-28. A kill and a block from the Cavaliers secured the points for the 30-28 win as the ‘Hoos took a 2-0 lead in to the break.
Virginia Tech and Virginia battled in the third set, with the Hokies in front 16-13 at midway through the frame. The Cavaliers tied it up at 16-16, but the Hokies again pulled in front and went up 20-17 as Samson-Akpan knocked down a kill. Tech was on set point at 24-22, but UVA again answered tying it up at 24-24. The two teams traded points, tying three more times, but this time the Hokies prevailed for the 29-27 win.
The two teams kept it close early in the fourth frame and were tied at 11-11 before UVA went on a run to move ahead 15-11. Tech pulled within two at 15-13 off a Cavalier error, but UVA again put distance in the scoring with a 4-0 run to go up 19-13. The Hokies were unable to get a run going late in the set as the Cavaliers secured the match with a 25-17 win.
Haley Kole led Virginia (11-10, 4-5 ACC) with 23 kills while Jasmine Burton added 10. Tori Janowski chipped in 15 for the offense. Lauren Fuller had 57 assists. Defensively, Emily Rottman posted 16 digs and Natalie Bausback recorded six blocks.
The Hokies will return to the court on Friday, Oct. 25 when they host ACC newcomer Notre Dame. Match-time is slated for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
