BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team used a third-frame comeback to defeat NC State in straight sets, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23) on Friday night in ACC action at Cassell Coliseum.
Victoria Hamsher posted 10 kills to lead the Hokies (17-4, 5-2 ACC) past the Wolfpack (14-5, 5-2 ACC). Kathryn Caine added nine kills while hitting .400 on the attack. Jordan Fish put up 32 assists and had 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
Amanda McKinzie notched 11 digs on the defensive side. LaTasha Samson-Akpan had five blocks and Caine posted three.
The first set was back-and-forth between the two teams with the score tied midway through the set at 12-12. Tech went on a 3-1 run to go in front 16-13, but the Wolfpack came back and was within one at 18-17. The Hokies answered, outscoring the Pack 4-0, taking a 22-17 lead off an NC State error. The Wolfpack would get no closer than two the rest of the way as Tech secured the win, 25-21.
In the second set, the Hokies came out strong, going up 13-8 off a kill from Hamsher. NC State looked to make a run, cutting the lead in half at 16-13, but the Hokies again extended their advantage to five at 19-14. NC State closed to within two several times over the final rallies and trailed by as many at 23-21, but a kill from Samantha Gostling followed by a costly Pack error gave the Hokies the points for the 25-21 win.
NC State took an early lead in the third frame, going on top 13-8. Tech chipped away at the Pack lead and cut it to one at 16-15 off a kill from Hamsher. The Wolfpack maintained the advantage and was up by three at 18-15, but the Hokies went on a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set at 19-18. Tech and NC State traded points over the next several rallies with the Hokies in front at 24-23. A kill from Caine secured the final point for Tech to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
Meredith Richardson led NC State with 10 kills while Brie Merriwether and Dariyan Hopper added eight each. Tanna Aljoe posted 35 assists. For the defensive side, Nikki Glass and Alston Kearns each tallied 13 digs. Merriwether recorded six blocks.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday, October 19 when they host No. 13 North Carolina at 6 p.m., in Cassell Coliseum. The match marks Tech’s annual Pink Match for breast cancer awareness.
