BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team returned to Cassell Coliseum in strong fashion on Friday night as the Hokies downed Boston College 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-14) to open the ACC home slate.

Victoria Hamsher and Kennedy Bryan led the Hokies (15-4, 3-2 ACC) with 14 kills each. Hamsher knocked down .550 on the attack while Bryan set a new career-high in kills. Jordan Fish put up 33 assists for Tech. On the defensive side, Megan Beckwith posted 20 digs while LaTasha Samson-Akpan had five blocks.

BC held the advantage early in the first set at 11-6, but the Hokies answered with a 5-0 run to tie it up at 11-11. The two teams traded points over the next few rallies and were tied at 13-13 when Tech broke open the scoring to take an 18-15 lead off a block from Samantha Gostling and Samson-Akpan. The Hokies closed out the set with a 7-4 run to claim the 25-19 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Virginia Tech and Boston College battled in the second set with 16 ties and 10 lead changes. The two teams traded points throughout and were knotted at 20-20 before the Eagles went on a 4-1 run to go on top 24-21. Tech responded though, coming back to tie it up at 24-24 off a kill from Kathryn Caine. The Hokies secured the final two points off a block from Caine and Hamsher followed by a BC error to win 26-24.

The Hokies dominated the third frame, getting out to a 14-4 lead just past the midway point. Boston College got no closer than eight (15-7) during the rest of the set as Tech rolled to the 25-14 win, securing the match 3-0.

Courtney Castle led the Eagles (8-9, 0-5 ACC) with eight kills. Kellie Barnum tallied 15 assists. Castle was also BC’s dig leader with 12. Barbara Gonzalez posted five blocks for the defensive side.

Virginia Tech returns to the court on Sunday, Oct. 13 when the Hokies host Syracuse. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
