COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team battled past ACC foe Maryland, 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 19-17) on Sunday afternoon at the Comcast Pavilion in College Park, Md.

Samantha Gostling led a quartet of Hokies (14-4, 2-2 ACC) with double-digit kills, posting 19. Lindsey Owens recorded her fourth double-double of the season with15 kills and 19 digs. Victoria Hamsher added 13 kills while Kathryn Caine tallied 12, hitting .345 and .385 on the attack, respectively.

Jordan Fish also recorded her fourth double-double of the season, putting up 59 assists for the offense while notching 11 digs on the defensive side. Caine was also strong on the defense with six blocks. Megan Beckwith recorded a match-high 23 digs.

The two teams kept it close in the first set and were tied midway through at 13-13. Tech broke open the scoring with an 8-2 run, going on top 21-15. Maryland looked to make a late run and trailed by two at 24-22, but a kill from Owens gave the Hokies the point for the 25-22 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Tech got out to the early lead in the second frame and was up 10-6. The Hokies maintained their advantage and were up 23-13, but the Terps again looked to make a run, scoring in the next five rallies to cut it down to 23-18. Tech scored the final two points off of kills from Hamsher and Gostling to win 25-19, going up 2-0 in the match.

Maryland took the lead in the third set, going on top 10-3. The Hokies cut it down to three at 10-7, but the Terps extended their advantage, outscoring Tech 5-1 over the next several rallies to go up 15-8. Virginia Tech closed the gap at 20-18, but Maryland again held off the Hokies. Tech trailed at 23-21, but the Terps used back-to-back from Emily Fraik to secure the points for the 25-21 win.

In the fourth set, the two teams were back-and-forth throughout with eight ties and two lead changes. Maryland held the slight advantage at 16-13, but the Hokies came back to tie it up at 18-18. The teams traded points over the next rallies and were tied at 22-22 late in the set. Maryland held off the Hokies for the 25-23 win, tying the match at 2-2 and forcing the fifth set.

The teams again were back-and-forth to start the final set with Maryland holding a 9-6 lead early. The Hokies answered with a 6-0 run to go on top 12-10 off a block from Owens. Maryland countered with a run of its own, tying it up at 13-13. The two teams traded points over the next rallies and were knotted at 17-17. Tech used a kill from Owens followed by a Terrapin error to secure the points for the 19-17 set victory, winning the match 3-2.

Mary Cushman had 19 kills and 15 digs for Maryland (10-6, 2-2 ACC). Ashlyn MacGregor added 12 kills. Sarah Haper tallied 20 digs while Adreene Elliott and Kelsey Hrebenach had six blocks each for the defensive side.

The Hokies will return to Cassell Coliseum for the ACC home opener, hosting Boston College at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.
