PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to ACC newcomer Pittsburgh, 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 18-25) on Friday evening at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Samantha Gostling led the Hokies (13-4, 1-2 ACC) with eight kills. Kathryn Caine added six while Victoria Hamsher posted five kills. Jordan Fish put up 22 assists.

On the defensive side, Kenedy McGrath posted nine digs. Hamsher tallied six blocks while Gostling and LaTasha Samson-Akpan added five each.

The two teams went back and forth to open the first set and were tied at 10-10 before the Panthers went on a 5-0 run to go on top 15-10. Tech answered, cutting the lead down to two at 17-15 off a block assist from Samson-Akpan and Gostling. Pitt again pulled ahead, and was up 20-17. The Hokies would get no closer as the Panthers picked up the 25-19 win.

Tech and Pitt again kept it close early in the set and were tied 12-12. The Panthers took a slight advantage and were up 16-13 just past the midway point of the second set. The Hokies kept it close over the next few rallies, but Pitt extended its lead to five at 23-17. Virginia Tech looked to make a late run, cutting it down at 24-20, but a kill by the Panthers secured the point for the 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Pittsburgh got out to an 8-4 lead early in the third frame, but the Hokies kept it close and tied it up at 16-16. The Panthers went on a 4-0 run to go up 20-16. The Hokies scored on the next rally, but Pitt extended its lead to six at 23-17. A kill and an ace gave the Panthers the points for the 25-18 win in the set, securing the match.

Jessica Wynn led the Panthers (11-5, 3-0 ACC) with 16 kills. Mechael Guess and Kate Yeazel added 10 kills each. Lindsey Zitzke and Jenna Jacobson put up 25 and 11 assists, respectively. Wynn also had nine digs on the defensive side and Yeazel tallied seven blocks.

The Hokies will remain on the road to face Maryland on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m.
