DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team faltered on the road at Duke, 3-0 (19-25, 22-25, 17-25) on Saturday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (13-3, 1-1 ACC) with 11 kills. Victoria Hamsher added seven on the attack. Jordan Fish tallied 33 assists for the offense.

Owens was also strong on the defensive side with six blocks including four solo blocks. Amanda McKinzie and Megan Beckwith recorded 10 digs each.

Virginia Tech and Duke kept it close in the early part of the first set and were tied at 11-11. The Blue Devils went on a 6-1 run to go on top 17-12. Tech cut it down to three, trailing by as many at 20-17 and again at 22-19, but Duke closed out the set claiming points on the next two rallies for the 25-19 win.

The second set started much like the first as the two teams were tied at 12-12. Duke again went on a run to go on top 20-14. The Hokies responded with an 8-3 run, cutting the gap down to 23-22 off a block from Owens to force a Blue Devil timeout. Duke came out of the break with back-to-back kills to secure the set 25-22, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

Tech took an early 5-1 lead in the third frame. Duke came back tying it up at 7-7. The two teams traded points over the next couple rallies and were tied at 9-9, but the Blue Devils broke it open with a 4-0 run to go ahead 13-9. Duke kept its offensive run going, pulling ahead 22-13. The Hokies were unable to make the late surge as Duke took the set 25-17, clinching the match.

Emily Sklar led the Blue Devils (11-2, 2-0 ACC) with 13 kills while Jeme Obeime posted nine. Chelsea Cook led on the defensive side with seven blocks and Ali McCurdy had 14 digs.

The Hokies will remain on the road for their next two, traveling to Pittsburgh on Friday, Oct. 4 before making the trip to Maryland on Sunday, Oct. 6.
