WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team opened the ACC slate with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-14) win over Wake Forest on Friday night at Reynolds Gym in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Victoria Hamsher posted 16 kills for the Hokies (13-2, 1-0 ACC) while hitting .375 on the attack. Samantha Gostling hit .500 on the attack, knocking down 13 kills while Lindsey Owens added 11 kills. Jordan Fish put up 47 assists for the offense and picked up 12 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Hamsher was also strong on the defensive side, posting seven blocks including two block solos. Owens tallied four blocks and recorded her third double-double of the season adding 13 digs to her 11 kills. Megan Beckwith was strong in the backcourt with a match-best 18 digs.
Wake Forest took an early lead in the first frame and was up by two, 14-12, midway through the set. The Deacs maintained their advantage and increased the lead to three at 23-20. Wake scored on the next two rallies to clinch the first set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The two teams battled in the second set with 13 ties and five lead changes. Wake and Tech were tied as late as 22-22, but the Hokies scored the next two to go on top, 24-22. The Deacs looked to even it up, scoring on the next rally, but the Hokies picked up the set winner off a Wake miscue. Tech evened the match at 1-1 with the 25-23 set win.
Wake got out to the early lead in the third set, going up 10-6. Tech responded with a 7-3 run to tie it up at 13-13 off a kill from Owens. The two teams were tied at 14-14 before Tech broke open the scoring, going on an 11-0 run to close out the set and roll to the 25-14 win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Hokies got out to the lead in the fourth frame, going on top 13-5 at the midway point. Wake was unable to get anything going on the offensive side as Virginia Tech closed out the set for the 25-14 win, securing the match.
Matalee Reed led Wake Forest (11-2, 0-1 ACC) with 11 kills. Sophia Dodd tallied 33 assists. Kylie Hargreaves and Dodd had 12 digs each for the defensive side.
The Hokies will stay on the road to face Duke on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
