LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team downed Bowling Green in a straight-set win, defeating the Falcons 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-16) on Saturday morning at the Active Ankle Challenge hosted by Louisville at Cardinal Arena in Louisville, Ky.
Freshman Lindsey Owens led the Hokies (12-1) with 13 kills, hitting .417 on the attack. Kathryn Caine tallied 10 kills while posting a hit percentage of .750 while Samantha Gostling also added 10 kills for Tech. Jordan Fish put up 41 assists for the offensive side. On the defense Megan Beckwith had 14 digs while LaTasha Samson-Akpan tallied three blocks.
In the first set, the Hokies took an early lead, getting out on top 9-3 in the opening rallies. The Hokies controlled the first set as the defense kept the Falcons from going on a run. Tech rolled to the 25-14 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Virginia Tech and Bowling Green kept it close early in the second set, but Tech held the 11-6 advantage midway through. The Falcons answered, cutting the lead down to two (18-16). Tech went on a 4-1 run to pull ahead 22-17 off a kill from Owens. BGSU again looked to make a run, closing it to three (24-21), but a kill from Amanda McKinzie gave the Hokies the point for the 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead.
The third set played out much like the first as the Hokies took an early 11-5 advantage over BGSU. The Falcons cut it down to three at 13-10, but would get no closer as the Hokies answered with a 12-3 run to close out the set and claim the match.
Lindsey Butterfield led Bowling Green (2-8) with 12 kills. Erica Fullenkamp tallied 21 assists in the match. Ashley Dunn recorded seven digs for the defense while Danielle Tonyan had four blocks.
The Hokies will be back on the court in the final match of the tournament, facing host team Louisville at 7:30 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
