BLACKSBURG, Va. – After faltering in the first set, the Virginia Tech volleyball team came back strong, rolling to wins in the next three as the Hokies defeated William & Mary 3-1 (26-28, 25-13, 25-6, 25-8) on Saturday afternoon during the second day of the Hokie Classic at Cassell Coliseum.
Lindsey Owens knocked down 12 kills to lead the Hokies (9-1). Victoria Hamsher and Kathryn Caine added 10 kills each. Both attackers were solid, knocking down .400 and .500 on the attack. Jordan Fish notched 48 assists.
On the defensive side, Megan Beckwith recorded a season-best 21 digs while Amanda McKinzie added 12. LaTasha Samson-Akpan tallied five blocks.
Virginia Tech got out to the lead in the first set and held its largest lead at 17-11. The Tribe battled back late in the set, cutting the Tech advantage down to one at 20-19. Tech held on to the lead on the next play, but W&M tied it up at 21-21. The two teams traded points over the next several rallies and were tied at 26. The Tribe secured the win off back-to-back kills from Mallory Brickerd.
The Hokies came out strong in the second frame, taking an early 9-3 lead off a kill from Owens. The Hokies extended their lead with another run, going on top 16-4. William & Mary would get no closer than 10 for the rest of the set as the Hokies rolled to the 25-13 win to tie the match at 1-1.
The third set played out much like the second as the Hokies hit .406 on the attack. The Hokies took the quick 14-3 lead and never looked back. Tech outscored the Tribe 11-3 in the second half of the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Virginia Tech was again solid on the attack, hitting .500 on the attack in the final set. The Hokies took a 13-4 lead midway through the set. The Tribe was unable to get anything going offensively as Tech took the 25-8 win to secure the match.
Brickerd led William & Mary (3-6) with 12 kills. Paige Lucas recorded 21 assists. Defensively, Celine Alasomuka recorded 16 digs.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court this evening when the Hokies face Duquesne at 7 p.m. in the final match of the Hokie Classic.
