MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After dropping the first set, the Virginia Tech volleyball team battled past UAB for the 3-1 (13-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23) win on Saturday evening at the Middle Tennessee Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Lindsey Owens, Victoria Hamsher and Samantha Gostling record 12 kills each to lead Tech (7-1) against UAB. Jordan Fish put up 45 assists and tallied 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. On the defensive side, Kenedy McGrath and Megan Beckwith had 15 digs each. LaTasha Samson-Akpan and Gostling tallied five blocks apiece.
UAB controlled the opening set, starting with an 11-3 run to take the early lead. The Blazers continued their run through the end of the set, outscoring the Hokies 14-10 in the final rallies to take the win, 25-13.
The two teams traded points to open the second set, but the Hokies moved in front, taking an 11-7 lead. UAB answered with a run to tie the set up at 11-11. Tech went on an 8-2 run to extend its lead (19-13), but the Blazers looked to make a move late in the set and cut the gap to 24-20. A kill from Owens secured the point for Tech to pick up the 25-20 win and tie the match at 1-1.
Virginia Tech fell behind early in the third frame as the Blazers took a 9-6 lead. The Hokies responded with a 13-6 run to go on top 19-15 off a kill from Fish. UAB kept it close and were within two at 20-18. Tech again extended its lead and was up 24-19, but the Blazers scored three unanswered points to close the score to 24-22. Samson-Akpan knocked down a kill on the next rally to give the Hokies the 25-22 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
UAB again got out to an early lead, going up 10-4 in the fourth set. The Hokies went on an 8-0 run to go on top 12-10 off an Owens ace. UAB pulled ahead late in the match and was up 23-18 late in the set. Tech made the late run in the set, tying it up at 23-23. A block from Hamsher followed by Owens’ fourth ace of the match secured the points for the Hokies to take the 25-23 win.
Kiriana Hirini posted 15 kills and tallied eight blocks for the Blazers (6-2). Becca Howard recorded 45 assists. Sam Skinner and Rachel Fairbanks had 14 digs each.
Tech will be back on the court on Friday, Sept. 13, hosting Lipscomb at 7 p.m. during the opening day of the Hokie Classic at Cassell Coliseum.
