MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team defeated North Dakota 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 26-24) on Saturday afternoon at the Middle Tennessee Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Kathryn Caine tallied 11 kills while hitting .421 on the attack. Victoria Hamsher added 10 kills, hitting .600 on the attack. Jordan Fish put up 42 assists on the offense. For the defensive side, Megan Beckwith and Lindsey Owens had 14 and 13 digs, respectively. LaTasha Samson-Akpan recorded three blocks.

In the opening set, the two teams traded points early and were tied midway through the set at 16-16. The Hokies broke open the scoring with a 3-0 run to take a 19-16 lead off an ace from freshman Amanda McKinzie. North Dakota closed to within two at 20-18, but Tech closed out the set with a 5-2 run to take the set 25-20.

Tech and ND kept it close early in the second set and were tied at 11-11. The Hokies went on an 8-3 run to go on top 18-13. North Dakota was unable to get anything going on the offensive side as the Hokies closed out the set with a 7-3 run for the 25-16 win.

North Dakota took the mid-set lead in the third frame and was up 15-10 before Tech answered with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 15-15 off a kill from Samantha Gostling. North Dakota reclaimed the lead on the next rally and wet on top 18-15 before the Hokies again went on a run to tie it up at 18-18. The two teams traded points over the next several rallies and were tied at 24. A kill from Gostling and a miscue from ND gave Tech the points for the 26-24 victory to win the match.

Lexi Robinson led North Dakota with 13 kills. Ellen Krueger had 24 assists while Nikki Husfeldt added 11. Anna Pioskie tallied 12 digs on the defensive side while Lisa Parlich tallied four blocks.

The Hokies will wrap-up the Middle Tennessee Invitational this evening in Murfreesboro, Tenn., facing UAB at 5:30 p.m. CT.
