MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team bested Middle Tennessee on Friday evening, claiming the 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-11) win over the Blue Raiders at the Middle Tennessee Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Samantha Gostling knocked down 11 kills for the Hokies (5-1), hitting .409 on the attack. Victoria Hamsher hit .769 on the attack, recording 10 kills on 13 attempts with no errors. Jordan Fish put up 38 assists. On the defensive side, Megan Beckwith had 13 digs while Lindsey Owens and LaTasha Samson-Akpan had three blocks each.
The Hokies and Blue Raiders traded runs in the opening set with 10 ties and six lead changes. MT took the early 6-2 lead, but the Hokies cut it to one at 6-5. The Blue Raiders extended their lead and went on top 13-5. Tech answered with a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to two, 13-11 off a service ace from Owens. Virginia Tech tied it up for the third time at 14-14. The two teams traded points over the next several rallies and were tied at 22-22, but MT recorded back-to-back blocks to go up 24-22. Tech responded and tied it up at 24-24. A kill from Gostling and a block from Hamsher gave Tech the points for the 26-24 win.
Middle Tennessee again took the early lead to open the second frame, going up 8-6. The Hokies tied it up at 10-10. Virginia Tech and MT were tied at 14-14 before Tech opened up the scoring to go up 17-14. Virginia Tech extended its lead to 21-16, but the Blue Raiders looked to rally late, cutting the lead down to three (22-19) late in the set. Back-to-back kills from Kathryn Caine and an MT misstep secured the points for the 25-19 Tech win.
Virginia Tech jumped out to an early lead in the final set and was up 11-3 midway through the set. Middle Tenneessee was never able to get anything going on the offense as the Hokies went up by 15 (23-8). Tech closed out the set for the 25-11 win to claim the match.
Chelsea Ross led Middle Tennesse with nine kills. Shelby Anderton had 14 assists. Kendall Howard recorded eight digs while three players recorded four blocks including Rachel Shaughnessy who had two solo blocks to go with her two assisted.
The Hokies will return to the court on Saturday to face North Dakota at 12:30 p.m. in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
