MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team got off to a strong start on Friday morning at the Middle Tennessee Invitational, defeating Austin Peay, 3-0 (25-21, 25-6, 25-16) in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Tech (4-1) hit .484 on the attack as a team, knocking down 50 kills on 91 attempts with just six errors. Kathryn Caine and Lindsey Owens led the Hokies with 11 kills each while Samantha Gostling added 10. Jordan Fish put up 35 assists in the match. On the defensive side, Megan Beckwith notched 12 digs while Owens and LaTasha Samson-Akpan posted three blocks each.
The Hokies and the Lady Govs went back and forth in the opening set with 16 ties and three lead changes. Tech and Austin Peay were tied as late as 17-17 before the Hokies put a little distance between the teams, taking a two-point lead. Virginia Tech maintained its advantage until the Lady Govs answered to tie the match for the 16th time at 21-21. The Hokies closed out the set with a 4-0 run that included three straight kills and a block to pick up the points for the 25-21 win.
Virginia Tech came out strong in the second set, taking an early 12-2 lead behind a 10-serve run from Kenedy McGrath. Austin Peay never got close as the Hokies again went on a run late in the set, highlighted by three straight kills from Caine. Tech rolled to the 25-6 win.
The Hokies fell behind early in the third set, trailing 7-4. Tech responded to move in to the lead, going on top 12-8 off a block from Samson-Akpan and Caine. Austin Peay closed the Tech lead to 12-10 on the next two rallies, but that is as close as the Lady Govs would get as Tech went on a 9-1 run to go up 21-11. The Hokies closed out the set to take the win 25-16.
Calyn Hull and Sammie Ebright had eight kills each to lead Austin Peay. Camie Fields tallied 24 assists. April Adams added 12 digs on the defensive side.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Friday evening as the Hokies face host-team Middle Tennessee in a 7:30 p.m.CT match.
