Hokies roll past Saint Francis, 3-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team rolled past Saint Francis, 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-17) on Saturday afternoon during the second day of the Hokie Invitational.

Kennedy Bryan led the Hokies (3-0) with eight kills, hitting .615 on the attack. Bryan was also strong on the defensive side, recording six digs. Amanda McKinzie added six kills for Tech. Kitija Megne recorded 12 assists, splitting time with Jordan Fish who had 10. LaTasha Samson-Akpan notched six blocks.

Virginia Tech cruised through the opening set and held a 12-7 advantage midway. The Hokies broke open the scoring on the next rally, extending their lead to 23-7 behind the serving of Fish. Tech rolled to the 25-9 win.

Tech again took an early lead to open the second set, going on top 10-3 off a block from Amanda McKinzie and Samson-Akpan. Saint Francis closed the gap to 11-7, but the Hokies answered to go up 16-10. The Tigers would come within four (18-14), but got no closer as Tech closed out the set with a 7-1 run.

The Hokies went up 9-2 early in the final frame, but the Tigers chipped away and pulled to within three at 15-12. Virginia Tech extended its lead to six at 19-13 and never looked back, claiming the 25-17 win.

Hannah Kutny led the Tigers with five kills. Alanna Blenkarn had 17 assists. On the defensive side, Breanna Kochinsky tallied 10 kills and Sophie Murdock notched three blocks.

The Hokies will wrap up the Hokie Invitational in tonight’s final match, facing No. 14 Michigan State at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
