RALEIGH, N.C. – After getting out to the early 2-0 lead, the Virginia Tech volleyball team fell in the next three sets as NC State rallied for a 3-2 (25-21, 25-17, 16-25, 13-25, 10-15) win on Saturday evening at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.
Samantha Gostling recorded 14 kills for Virginia Tech (15-14, 8-11 ACC) while Victoria Hamsher added 13, hitting .550 on the attack. Kathryn Caine notched eight kills. Jordan Fish and Allison Munter put up 32 and 18 assists, respectively.
Defensively for the Hokies, Morgan O'Neill had 19 digs with Kenedy McGrath tallying 12. Cara Baarense posted 13 digs and four blocks. LaTasha Samson-Akpan had a match-high five blocks.
Dariyan Hopper had 23 kills for NC State (22-8, 12-7 ACC). Rachel Buckley had 14 and Nikki Glass knocked down 13. Megan Cyr had 53 assists and 12 digs. Alston Kearns also posted 12 digs while Brie Merriwether recorded three blocks for the Wolfpack defense.
The Hokies got out in the opening set, taking the early lead, but the Wolfpack kept it close and trailed by one at 8-7. Tech extended its advantage to 11-7 and took its largest lead, going up six at 17-11. NC State responded to cut it to two at 22-20. Back-to-back kills from Gostling pushed the Hokies to a 24-21 lead and a kill from Baarendse secured the set for Tech.
In the second set, Tech jumped out early, going on top 11-5. Virginia Tech took its largest lead of the set, up nine at 19-10. The Wolfpack was unable to get anything going on the offense as the Hokies rolled to the 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The two teams kept it close early in the third frame and were tied at 12, but the Wolfpack used a 9-3 run to go up 21-15. The Hokies would score once more, but NC State closed out the set to win 25-16.
The fourth set played out much like the third as the two teams were tied early at nine. NC State broke open the scoring with a 10-1 run to go on top 19-10. Tech was unable to respond as the Wolfpack took the fourth set, 25-13, tying the match at two sets each.
Virginia Tech and NC State were tied early in the fifth set at six, but the Wolfpack took the lead at 9-6. NC State maintained their advantage as the Hokies got no closer than two at 10-8. The Wolfpack closed out the set for the 15-10 win to secure the match.
The Hokies hit .299 (54-16-127) on the attack while the Wolfpack knocked down .333 (68-19-147). Virginia Tech was strong on the defensive side, recording 9.5 team blocks to NC State’s six. The Hokies also tallied 56 digs while NCSU had 51.
Virginia Tech will wrap up the regular season next weekend, hosting cross-state ACC rival Virginia on Friday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
