CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to 25th-ranked North Carolina on Friday evening in ACC action at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Samantha Gostling led the Hokies (15-13, 8-10 ACC) with 11 kills while hitting .348 on the attack. Victoria Hamsher and Kathryn Caine added eight kills each. Jordan Fish and Allison Munter put up 20 and 13 assists, respectively.
On the defensive side, Morgan O'Neill recorded 20 digs for the Hokies. LaTasha Samson-Akpan had five block assists with Jennifer Wiker posting four.
Paige Neuenfeldt knocked down 15 kills for the Tar Heels (23-5, 14-4 ACC). Kayla Berringer and Emily McGee posted nine kills each. Cora Harms put up 26 assists with Jordyn Schnabl adding 17. Defensively, McGee had 16 digs and Chaniel Nelson had three blocks.
UNC got out to an early lead in the opening set, going up 11-7. The two teams traded points over the next several rallies before the Hokies went on a run to pull within one at 14-13. Carolina answered with a 5-0 run to go up 19-14. The Hokies closed it to three points at 21-18, but the Tar Heels outscored Tech 3-2 to close out the set for a 25-20 win.
In the second frame, the Hokies went up early, taking a 9-4 lead. The Tar Heels went on a 5-2 run to pull within one at 11-10, but the Hokies held on to go up 15-12. Carolina again responded, outscoring Tech 7-1 to take a 19-16 advantage. Virginia Tech closed the gap to one at 19-18, but was unable to get any closer as the Tar Heels claimed the second set, 25-22.
Virginia Tech and UNC kept it close early in the third set, with the Tar Heels holding a 10-9 advantage. Carolina extended its lead with an 8-2 run to go up 18-11. The Hokies closed the gap to two at 23-21, but a pair of UNC kills secured the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
Virginia Tech hit .216 (41-17-111) on the match while the Tar Heels hit .298 (50-14-121). The Hokies had 51 digs and seven team blocks to Carolina’s 49 digs and six blocks. Both teams recorded three aces.
The Hokies will remain in North Carolina to face NC State on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.
