BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to ACC rival Maryland, 3-1 (21-25, 19-25, 25-19, 20-25) on Saturday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
Cara Baarendse knocked down 15 kills for Virginia Tech (15-12, 8-9 ACC) while Victoria Hamsher added 10 kills. Jordan Fish and Allison Munter put up 22 and 21 assists, respectively.
On the defensive side, Morgan O'Neill tallied 20 digs with Kenedy McGrath adding 14. Hamsher along with LaTasha Samson-Akpan recorded five blocks each.
Ashleigh Crutcher led a trio of Terrapins (16-13, 7-10 ACC) in double digit kills with 13. Adreene Elliott had 12 and Kelsey Hrebenach posted 10. Remy McBain had 28 assists with Mackenzie Dagostino adding 20. Defensively, Amy Dion tallied 16 digs while Elliott and Crutcher had five blocks each.
In the opening set, the two teams kept it close with 11 ties and six lead changes. Tech and Maryland were tied at 13 before the Terps went on a run to go up 16-13, forcing a Hokie timeout. Virginia Tech answered to tie the set at 17. The two teams traded points over the next few rallies and were tied at 21. Maryland closed out the set with a 4-0 run to win 25-21 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Tech and Maryland again traded points early in the second set and were tied at 12 before the Terrapins went on a 4-1 run to open the scoring and take a 17-13 lead. The Hokies were within two at 19-17, but the Terps again answered with a run to go on top 24-17. Tech scored on the next two rallies, but a kill by Crutcher secured the point for the Terps to take the set 25-19 and a 2-0 match lead.
The Hokies got out to the lead in the third set and were up 16-12. Tech extended its lead to 18-12 off back-to-back aces from Baarendse to force a second Maryland timeout. Maryland cut the lead down to four at 21-17, but the Hokies outscored the Terps 4-2 over the final rallies to claim the set 25-19.
Maryland held the advantage early in the fourth frame and was up 14-11 before the Hokies went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-14 lead. The two teams traded points and were tied at 19, but the Terps responded with a 4-1 run to go on top 23-20. Maryland secured the set and the match with back-to-back kills from Crutcher.
The Terrapins hit .232 (58-23-151) on the attack while the Hokies knocked down .189 (48-21-143). Maryland tallied 10 aces, 12 blocks and 63 digs. The Hokies had 11.5 team blocks, 60 digs and four aces.
The Hokies will be back on the road for their next match, traveling to North Carolina for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Nov. 16. Tech will remain in North Carolina to face NC State on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m.
