BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team defeated ACC foe Boston College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-13) on Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.
Cara Baarendse led a balanced attack for the Hokies (15-11, 8-8 ACC) with nine kills. Jennifer Wiker added eight kills and Victoria Hamsher had seven. Jordan Fish put up 16 assists. Allison Munter recorded her first career double-double with 12 assists and 11 digs.
On the defensive side, Hamsher and Wiker both had three blocks. Kenedy McGrath tallied 13 digs.
Kameron McLain and Courtney Castle led the Eagles (10-18, 4-12 ACC) with nine kills each. Kellie Barnum had 26 assists while Franny Hock posted 15 digs.
The Hokies jumped out in the opening set, taking a 12-5 lead. Tech claimed its largest advantage of the set at 20-8. BC looked to make a late run and cut it down to nine at 24-15, but an error by the Eagles gave the Hokies the point for a 25-15 win and a 1-0 lead in the match. Virginia Tech hit .407 in the set while holding the Eagles to .079.
In the second set, the Eagles came out strong, taking an early 7-4 lead, but the Hokies responded to tie the set at 10 off an ace from Baarendse. The Hokies moved ahead and were up 18-14, but BC answered to pull within one at 18-17 forcing a Virginia Tech timeout. Tech extended its lead back to three, but again the Eagles threatened late, closing the gap to 22-21. A kill from Samantha Gostling followed by another Baarendse ace put the Hokies on set point at 24-21. Tech secured the set off a block from Hamsher and LaTasha Samson-Akpan to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Virginia Tech took the quick lead in the final set, going up 11-5. Boston College pulled within three (12-9), but Tech used a 5-1 run to extend its lead to 17-10. The Eagles would get no closer as the Hokies closed out the set with an 8-3 run to secure the 25-13 win and the match.
The Hokies hit .238 (37-13-101) on the attack while BC hit .100 (34-22-120). Tech recorded 55 digs to the Eagles’ 48. Virginia Tech also recorded seven team blocks to BC’s four.
Tech will be back on the court on Saturday, Nov. 10, when the team hosts Maryland at 6 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
