BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team downed Georgia Tech 3-1 (25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 27-25) on Saturday evening in an ACC match at Cassell Coliseum.
Cara Baarendse recorded 14 kills while hitting .500 on the attack for the Hokies (14-11, 7-8 ACC). She also tallied 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Samantha Gostling added 10 kills. Jordan Fish and Allison Munter put up 31 and 13 assists, respectively.
Defensively, Morgan O'Neill posted a career-high 30 digs in the match. LaTasha Samson-Akpan had 10 blocks and Jennifer Wiker notched six as the Hokies recorded 14.5 as a team.
Bailey Hunter knocked down 18 kills for the Yellow Jackets (16-10, 7-8 ACC) and Monique Mead added 12. Kaleigh Colson tallied 36 assists. On the defensive side, Nicki Meyer had 23 digs and Annie Czarnecki had three blocks.
The Hokies got out to the early lead in the opening set, going up 13-8 to force a Yellow Jackets’ timeout. Georgia Tech looked to make a run and cut the lead to one at 14-13, but the Hokies responded to pull ahead 20-14 off an ace from Wiker. The Hokies closed out the set with a 5-1 run to win 25-15 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Virginia Tech again got out to the early lead and was up 16-8. The Yellow Jackets were unable to get anything going offensively as the Hokies rolled to a 25-15 win and 2-0 match lead.
Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech kept it close in the third set with the Yellow Jackets holding the advantage. The Hokies tied it up late in the set at 20 off a kill from Gostling. Georgia Tech reclaimed the lead, going up 22-20. Virginia Tech would get as close as one but the Yellow Jackets held on for a 25-23 win.
In the fourth set, Georgia Tech had a strong start, taking a 17-11 lead. The Hokies slowly cut into the deficit and trailed 21-17 before going on a 3-0 run to pull within one off an ace from Gostling. Georgia Tech extended its lead back to two (23-21), but the Hokies tied it at 23 to force a GT timeout. The two teams were tied at 24 and 25, but a pair of attack errors by the Yellow Jackets secured the points for the Hokies to take the set 27-25 and the match 3-1.
Virginia Tech hit .282 (48-13-124) on the attack with Georgia Tech hitting .142 (56-34-155). The Hokies recorded 58 digs to the Yellow Jackets’ 54. Virginia Tech had 14.5 team blocks while GT recorded five.
The Hokies will return to the court on Friday, Nov. 9, when they host Boston College at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
