BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to Clemson 3-2 (26-24, 15-25, 29-27, 17-25, 9-15) on Friday evening in an ACC match at Cassell Coliseum.
Samantha Gostling posted 18 kills to lead Virginia Tech (13-11, 6-8 ACC) while Jennifer Wiker knocked down 16. Victoria Hamsher added nine kills. Jordan Fish recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 37 assists and 10 digs.
On the defensive side, Morgan O'Neill led the Hokies in digs with 24. Cara Baarendse had 14 digs while adding four blocks and Kenedy McGrath posted 11 digs. LaTasha Samson-Akpan had a team-best five blocks.
Moneshia Simmons had a match-high 25 kills to lead Clemson (17-8, 8-6 ACC). Sandra Adeleye added 17 kills. Serenat Yaz posted a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Hannah Brenner also had a double-double for the Tigers, notching 51 assists and 16 digs. Defensively, Natalie Patzin had 27 digs and Alexa Rand tallied nine blocks.
In the first set, the two teams traded points with 11 ties and three lead changes. The largest lead of the set was two points when the Hokies held a 20-18 advantage. Virginia Tech and Clemson were tied at 24 but a kill from Baarendse followed by a Tech block secured the points for a 26-24 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Clemson and Tech kept it close in the first part of the second set and were tied at seven. The Tigers went on a run to go up 16-10. The Hokies would get no closer the rest of the way as Clemson won the second set 25-15, tying the match at 1-1.
The third set had the two teams going back and forth with 15 ties and six lead changes. The Tigers looked to break open the scoring late in the set and were up 21-19, but the Hokies answered to tie it up at 22. Virginia Tech and Clemson were tied at 27 before a kill from Wiker and Clemson attack error claimed the points for the Hokies to win 29-27 and reclaim a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Tigers got out quick in the fourth frame, taking an early 6-0 lead. Tech looked to make a run and pulled within one at 10-9. Clemson responded to go on top 20-15. CU took the set 25-17, knotting the match at 2-2.
Clemson controlled much of the fifth set after taking the 5-1 early lead. The Tigers extended their advantage at 10-3. Tech closed the gap to three at 12-9, but Clemson closed out the set with a 3-0 run to secure the match.
The Tigers hit .264 (69-22-178) on the attack while the Hokies hit .120 (57-32-209). Defensively, Clemson tallied 12 team blocks to Tech’s 10. CU also notched 96 digs while the Hokies recorded 77.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Saturday, Nov. 3, when the Hokies host Georgia Tech in a 6 p.m. match at Cassell Coliseum.
